How to Recover an Argent Wallet If You Lose Your Phone
If you lose the phone running your Argent wallet, you can regain access using your guardians - the people or devices you previously nominated to approve recovery requests. Argent uses a social recovery mechanism: you submit a recovery request, your guardians vote to approve it, and after a waiting period the wallet is reassigned to a new device you control.
What happens when you lose your phone
Argent wallets are smart contract wallets deployed on Ethereum, Starknet, or zkSync Era. The wallet contract stores your assets, and access is controlled by a set of guardian addresses you chose during setup. The phone app itself holds a signing key that lets you submit transactions, but the contract recognizes that key only as long as you do not trigger a recovery.
Losing the phone means you lose that signing key. You cannot access the wallet until you complete a recovery, which replaces the old key with a new one.
What you need to recover
Before you start, make sure you have:
- A new phone with the Argent app installed. You will create a new signing key on this device.
- Access to at least one guardian - either another device you control (a second phone, a hardware wallet, or a browser extension) or a trusted person who agreed to be a guardian. Argent requires a minimum of one guardian vote, but the exact threshold depends on how you configured the wallet.
- Your wallet address. If you do not remember it, check a previous transaction record or ask a guardian who has it saved.
If you set up email recovery as an additional option, you may also need access to that email address. Email recovery is not the same as guardian voting; it is a separate fallback that some Argent deployments support.
Step-by-Step Recovery Process
1. Install Argent on Your New Phone
Download the Argent app and create a new local account. Do not try to import your old wallet - recovery is handled through the app's recovery flow, not by importing a seed phrase. Argent wallets do not use a seed phrase in the conventional sense.
2. Start the Recovery Request
In the app, select "Recover wallet" or the equivalent option. Enter the wallet address of the lost wallet. The app will generate a recovery request and display a recovery code or QR. This code identifies your request to the guardians.
3. contact your guardians
You need at least one guardian to approve the request. How you contact them depends on who they are:
- If the guardian is another device you own: Open the Argent app on that device, go to the guardian management section, and approve the pending recovery request. You may need to scan a QR code or enter the recovery code.
- If the guardian is a person: They will receive a notification in their Argent app (if they use one) or a prompt via the method you agreed on. They approve the request through their own interface.
The guardian does not need to know your wallet's private key or seed phrase. They simply confirm that you are who you claim to be.
4. Wait for the Recovery Period
After the required number of guardians have approved, a timer starts. This waiting period - typically 24 to 72 hours on Ethereum mainnet, and shorter on L2s - gives you time to cancel the recovery if it was initiated by an attacker. During this period, the old signing key remains active, so the attacker could still move funds if they had the phone. On most Argent deployments, you can also cancel the recovery from the new phone if you regain access to the old one.
5. Claim the Wallet on Your New Phone
Once the waiting period ends, the app on your new phone becomes the active signing device. The wallet contract updates its authorized signing key to the new phone's key. You can now send transactions from the new phone as if nothing happened.
What happens to your funds during recovery
Your assets stay in the wallet contract the entire time. They are not moved, frozen, or transferred to a temporary address. The only change is which signing key the contract recognizes. If an attacker had your old phone and knew your PIN, they could drain the wallet during the waiting period. This is why Argent recommends setting a long recovery delay and enabling notifications so you can cancel a fraudulent recovery.
If you cannot reach any guardian
If you lose your phone and have no access to any guardian, recovery is not possible through the standard social recovery mechanism. Argent does not offer a backdoor or admin override. This is a deliberate design choice: if the developers could bypass guardians, so could an attacker or a government.
If you set up email recovery, check whether that option is still available. Some Argent versions let you recover using an email confirmation instead of a guardian vote, but this is less common on the latest deployments.
Preventing this problem next time
- Add at least two guardians - ideally one device you control and one trusted person. This gives you a backup if one guardian is unavailable.
- Store your wallet address somewhere accessible - for example, in a password manager or with a trusted contact. You need it to start a recovery.
- Test the recovery flow on a small wallet before you need it. This confirms your guardians understand the process and that you can reach them.
The social recovery system is designed to avoid the single-point-of-failure problem of seed phrases while still giving you a path back in if you lose your device. The cost is that you must maintain relationships with your guardians.
